At her appointment on Tuesday, she was 6.8 pounds when they weighed her. She had lost some weight, but that was typical of a breastfed baby. My milk had not come in, yet, so all she was getting when I fed her was the colostrum. Another concern was how jaundice Danica appeared, so they wanted her tested. This meant we had to go to Wake Med North to have her heel pricked again so they could check her billirubin level. So after making her another appointment for Friday to have her weight checked again, we headed out in the rain to take her to Wake Med. Joe let us out at the front and we waited inside for him while he parked. I remember her being awake and talking to her in the lobby. I remember telling her that we were waiting for daddy and that he would be right there. I also remember singing to her. I don't remember what I sang, but I remember singing to her since I knew she was about to be unhappy. The receptionist there was really nice and asked about Danica. So we got to tell her all about Danica's birth and her name. I really loved it when people asked about her. There was also an elderly couple in the laboratory, where we were, that asked about her as well. We talked with them a bit while we were waiting. When it was time to take Danica back, they let me hold her in my lap instead of laying her down. She didn't like the prick and cried, of course. I just held her tight and rocked her long enough to soothe her before putting her back in her carseat. They told us they would call us later that afternoon to let us know the results of the test. It had stopped raining when we left. Danica fell asleep on the way home.
We did get a call later that afternoon. Danica's billirubin level was low, so there was no reason to treat her. We understood that the "yellow" in her skin would eventually fade. We were so relieved.
