On September 25, the doctor put our sweet Rusty to sleep. I met Mema at the doctors office that morning so I could kiss Rusty one last time. Joe buried him on the farm with a penny for all the money he stole and a bear that he got when he bought my engagement ring. Ironically, September 25 was the day after our wedding anniversary. I wanted to post the facebook comments that were made that day by Joe, Travis, and myself.
Joseph Sutton Me and the old man of the family!! He is gone today but will forever be with us. He was nearly 13, which is pretty damn old in our years. And he seemed ready. He was almost completely greyed, and looked like he had a small beard of that like an old wise man. Which he was. He was blind and deaf in his old age, but his nose still worked and he was even running a little outside in his last days. He lived a great life, and a life of freedom on the farm. In his prime, if he wasn't chasing field workers, cars, or our field worker Willie Grey on his bicycle or moped, he was stealing what ever he could for food...even money...and dentures once. He was always plotting his next move. He enjoyed dry humping blankets, pillows, and a little stuffed lamb and he dared anyone to stop him, probably a little TMI, but that was Rusty. Him and my brother were like brothers who pushed each others buttons, and Rusty didn't back down from anyone or anything....me and my brother have scars on our hands to prove it. He became more mellow in his later years, and we had the privilege of raising our daughter around him. She let him out at our baby reveal for Maverick and you would have thought a tiger had be let out of the cage by the reaction of people grabbing up kids and running. Rusty however was just glad to be out and running free. I received him on Valentines Day in 2001 from my wife Olivia, so he will always and forever hold a special place in my heart. I just hope to find a dog as good as him for my kids to grow up with. He was buried with flowers on top of him, a penny for the money he stole, and one of three bears from when I proposed to Olivia. He will be greatly missed, but never forgotten!! We miss you already buddy.
Travis Sutton I miss him. He was there from the time I was 12 til the time I left home at 21. So many great memories, he could bite me for interfering with his feed time or with his blanket hump time, but would turn around and have my back if anyone seemed like a threat or would connive his way into getting a treat by stealing 1)underwear 2)cigarettes 3)money 4) anything that fell out of dads pocket when he bent over to pick something up. Amazing dog, and even further, a best friend. I hope he's chasing Willie Grey around in heaven.
Olivia McGlohon Sutton Laughing at the chasing field workers remark. I can see him chasing that moped now. Amazing that Rusty was the smallest...yet most feared dog on the farm. Isn't he the reason Mema had to put the Beware of Dog sign up? The same dog that would go up to any child and let them pet him...but would bark at any adult stranger. He was so protective of us. Don't forget I brought rusty home after watching all of you cry when you watched My Dog Skip. We decided right then and there that we needed a Jack Russell. And he was the man! I will always love him and will never forget him.
Rusty is sure to keep heaven entertained! We'll see you soon buddy!
