Praying for Wake, Greene, and Bertie Counties

North Carolina experienced some of the worst tornadoes the state has ever endured Saturday night. NC hasn’t had tornadoes like that since 1984. We were at Mema’s house in Farmville, watching the news, when we learned that tornadoes had hit the Raleigh area and were headed our way. To keep busy, we dyed/decorated Easter Eggs and cooked dinner. It was Danica’s first time making Easter Eggs and I took pictures. When we realized the storm was in our area, we took cover in a little room with no windows until the storm passed. Other than spending 10 minutes in that little room, our evening went as usual.

Unfortunately, others were not so lucky.

It is estimated that at least 25 tornadoes hit 32 counties Saturday evening. There was a lot of damage. Wake, Greene and Bertie Counties suffered the most. Reports today are estimating that 440 homes and 21 businesses were destroyed while 6, 189 houses and 92 business suffered significant damage.

24 people lost their lives in those storms. And their stories are so hard to hear. Four children critically injured while hiding in a closet with her mother/aunt (2 were her children and 2 were her nephews) died when a tree collapsed on their mobile home. The mother survived. She is burying her children/nephews today. A man and a woman along with the woman’s mother, who took shelter with them during the storm, lost their lives when a tornado ripped their home from the ground and tossed it. Not only are their family members arranging three funerals this week, they are working at the destruction site, trying to salvage their family’s most precious possessions.

I am praying so hard for the families affected by Saturday night’s storms. I can’t even imagine how devastating it is to lose your home and your family in just a matter of minutes or what it must like to pick up the pieces left behind and get back to a sense of normal. I just pray that they will trust in the Lord and seek him for peace and healing during this time.
