Kelly's Korner SUYL

Kelly’s Korner topic for Show Us Your Life Friday is Show Us Your Book List. I LOVE to read! I believe a person’s bookshelf is the window to their soul. You can learn a lot about a person’s passions just by viewing the books they read. So far this year, I’ve reserved my reading interests to titles that will help me grow in my faith. I’ve read What Southern Women Know about Faith by Rhonda Rich, Crazy Love by Francis Chan, and Can a Smart Person Believe in God by Michael Guillen. I”ve even started reading Christianity for Dummies. What can I say… it’s really interesting!

I work at a community college and check out books from their library all the time. I get so overwhelmed by all the books, so I wait for those moments when an interesting topic strikes a cord and go from there. This is the way it happens: I read something that makes me think. Then I start asking questions, look up stuff on Wikipedia, and then end up on the library catalog page. I figure it’s better than stopping by Barnes and Noble, walking around trying to decide what book to buy, and then leaving without a book (but not before buying a caramel macchiato instead). Due to this method, some of last years books included the following: Sex, Science, and Stem Cells by Diana DeGette (Nancy Reagan was on my mind), and A Walk on the Beach by Joan Anderson (I was researching books about psychologists and this one is about a journey the author took with Erik Erikson’s wife). I'm also a counselor, so I recommend The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey to most of my clients (I live for self help books)!

I’ve also discovered that if you create an account with Barnes and Noble, you can read up to five chapters of books for free! I usually discover a book that I’m interested in and read the first few chapters of the book online. Then I pick it up in the library or at Barnes and Noble to read the rest. I recently read some of Water for Elephants online and still need to pick up the book! I’m a little scared to, though. I read Dear John by Nicholas Sparks last year and was extremely DISAPPOINTED in the movie! I really hope they do this book justice. It’s really good so far and I can’t wait to finish it. And Reese Witherspoon is my all-time favorite actress, so it makes me even more eager to read the book and see the movie!

Other than that, I read a ton of children’s books. I read to Danica every night before bed time. I love it! Most of the books I read have been around for ages and take me back to my own childhood. I’ve decided that one of the best things about parenthood is the ability to be a witness to the learning process of you and your child. You get to see first hand how you learned and then you get to be responsible for the learning process of another. It really is the neatest thing.

Since my husband reads my blog, I’d also like to mention my extreme desire to be gifted with a Nook on Mother’s Day! I understand that you can share books with other Nook owners and my friend Cindy has one. She loves it! If you happen to have one, I invite you to leave me a comment about how great it is. Maybe that will help me get my wish!Thank you so much for stopping by!
