A Trip Down Memory Lane

PCC classes started this week, so I’ve been busy with late registration and drop/add period for students. I was so busy that I didn’t get to post a Wordful Wednesday- and I have some funny words to share!

The other night, when it began to rain a bit, Danica announced that she felt water on her face. When we told her it was ok and that is was just rain, she said, “No, it’s not rain, its water!” It was so funny! We didn’t know how to respond to that, so we just agreed with her that it was water.

Danica is officially potty trained and wearing big girl panties to school. YEAH! I am so proud of her. And just in time for her to start her new class in preschool next week! Now that she is trained, though, she’s trying to get her baby dolls trained. It’s been so funny to watch her put her dolls on the potty and tell them to go pee-pee. Last night, however, she sat her doll down in her little chair and told her how it works, “We don’t pee-pee in our panties, we pee-pee in the potty, OK!? (A lot of emphasis on the OK part).” Joe and I died laughing- she sounded just like me!

I’ve spent the past few nights showing Danica video of her as a baby right before reading books and going night-night. She loves watching the video and will announce that she is ready to go to bed by saying, “I want to go watch Danica.” We just laugh and laugh at all the funny things I recorded Danica doing as a baby. I’ve shed a few tears myself… and for three reasons: One, my baby is grown; Two, I want another baby; and Three, I realize how much I’m really going to miss my house when it sells.

I really love that house. I cry every time I go up there now because I know I’m going to miss it so badly when it’s no longer ours. It’s the first and only house we’ve ever bought and since it was a new construction home, we are the only ones who have ever lived there. It sounds silly to be that connected to a house, but a house is the center of a family. It’s where love brews and memories are made. And a lot of memories were made there. Not only did we put our sweat, blood, and tears into making the home our own (including Joe digging up hundreds of rocks that later became a rocked path to the fire pit), that’s where we lived when we brought Danica into the world. But although that’s where our little family lived, it’s just not where our big family lives, and we realize we need them, too. So as much as I love that house, home is where our family and friends are!

I’d also like to take another stroll down memory lane as I reminisce about August 18, 2000. 11 years ago, I met my husband, and August 18 is the day we decided that we were going to start dating. I had just met him 2 weeks prior when he invited me to a send-off his parents were throwing him since he was getting ready to transfer to Guilford College. Turned out, he didn’t really want to go and was looking for a reason to stay at home and go to ECU. What better reason than me? I drove to Greensboro to pick him up on a Tuesday and we started dating on Friday. 11 years later... He still ROCKS my world!
